When Elon Musk, the wealthiest man on the planet, publicly calls one of Hollywood’s most respected directors an “anti-white racist” before the film has even been released, it stops the entertainment industry cold. The target of that attack was Christopher Nolan, and the film is his upcoming epic The Odyssey, a massive IMAX production set for release on July 17th, 2026. The movie is based on Homer’s 3,000-year-old Greek poem about King Odysseus, who struggles for a decade to return home from war. Universal Pictures was confident enough to begin selling tickets a full year in advance, and the cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Downey Jr.
, and Robert Pattinson. The controversy began with the casting of Helen of Troy. Homer described her as fair-skinned and blonde, and her beauty was famously said to have launched a thousand ships, meaning men went to war over her. In November 2024, news broke that Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, who won Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years a Slave, had joined the cast.
On May 13th, 2026, Nolan confirmed in an interview with Time magazine that Nyong’o would play both Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra. Nolan reportedly called her his first and only choice, with no casting search or auditions reported. The announcement triggered immediate online backlash, including a viral post on X that Musk himself amplified, claiming the casting made the story’s premise “incoherent” and was an insult to the author. Musk did not stop there.
He fired three separate attacks at Nolan over a four-month period. On January 31st, 2026, while the Nyong’o casting was still unconfirmed, Musk posted simply, “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity. ” On May 15th, after the casting was official, Musk escalated, writing, “Chris Nolan desecrated the Odyssey so that he would be eligible for an Academy Award,” suggesting Nolan sold out a 3,000-year-old text for a trophy. The final attack came on May 22nd, 2026, when Musk posted without qualification, “Chris Nolan is an anti-white racist.
” The View host Sunny Hostin responded on air, calling Musk himself a racist for trafficking what she called white supremacy online. Her clip surpassed 2 million views within 24 hours. Musk also amplified posts calling Nolan a coward and saying Hollywood was “all in on communism,” while ouring the director’s desire for praise. It is worth noting that Nolan’s previous film, Oppenheimer, was criticized by some progressive critics for not being diverse enough, a detail that makes Musk’s accusation particularly pointed.
Two other casting choices fueled the chaos. Travis Scott, the rapper whose Astroworld concert in 2021 resulted in 10 deaths, was confirmed to play a bard, an ancient Greek traveling poet-singer. Nolan defended the choice, saying he wanted to nod to the story being handed down as oral poetry, which he called “analogous to rap. ”
Additionally, reports surfaced that Elliot Page would play Achilles, the greatest warrior in Greek mythology.
This casting remains technically unconfirmed; Page appears on the film’s IMDb page, but Nolan has not officially addressed it. Comparisons to Brad Pitt’s portrayal of Achilles in the 2004 film Troy dominated social media for weeks, and Musk called the Page rumor “one of the dumbest and most twisted things I have heard. ”
Beyond the casting disputes, journalists at The Collider noted that The Odyssey has become a culture war battleground, with audiences judging a film they have not seen based on rumors and limited details. They drew parallels to the backlash preceding the recent Snow White adaptation starring Rachel Zegler.
The most underreported element of the story involves Greek taxpayer money. Greece’s official government transparency portal, the Diavgeia portal, documents that the Greek government gave Nolan’s production 6. 9 million euros of public funds to film in the country. Star Channel’s editor-in-chief Ilias Papanikolaou called the film a “falsification of a global literary treasure funded by Greek taxpayers.

Modern Greeks have also published an open letter noting that none of the film’s main cast members have Greek ancestry, while famous Greek-heritage actors such as Jennifer Aniston, John Stamos, and Zach Galifianakis were reportedly passed over. Multiple analysts further believe Nolan’s script may rely on Emily Wilson’s 2017 feminist translation of the Odyssey, the first English translation by a woman, which deliberately reframes power dynamics and gender roles. Nolan has referenced Wilson’s work in interviews without fully confirming or denying its use. The Odyssey releases in IMAX in 34 days.
Whether it becomes a masterpiece or an expensive cultural miscalculation, it has already generated global controversy before a single paying audience member has entered a theater.
