Why Did Ancient Humans Abandon Caves?

The popular image of prehistoric humans as permanent cave dwellers, sleeping on rock floors and painting walls by firelight as their primary domestic activity, is wrong in ways that matter for understanding the real story. Caves were used extensively, and the archaeological evidence for that use is rich and detailed, but engagement with a cave is not the same as permanent residence in one. The Lascaux paintings, the Altamira bison, the handprint stencils of Sulawesi, and the hearths at Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa are products of sustained human engagement with cave environments. However, when examining how caves were used versus how open-air sites were used, and what drove the balance between them over the long arc of prehistory, a more interesting story emerges than the cave dweller cliché suggests.

The question of why ancient humans abandoned caves is the wrong question. The right question is why cave use declined relative to other shelter options as humans developed more sophisticated technology and social organization. The answer reveals something fundamental about human intelligence and how it changes the relationship between a species and its environment. Caves offered real advantages.

They provided shelter without construction, with rock overhead keeping rain off and walls blocking wind. The thermal mass of surrounding rock buffered temperature extremes, making caves cool in summer and relatively warm in winter. For mobile foraging groups with limited carrying capacity, a shelter that exists in the landscape and requires nothing to use was a resource that didn’t have to be transported or constructed. Caves also provided defensibility.

A cave entrance narrows the approach, meaning predators or rival groups cannot easily surround a group sleeping inside. The entrance could be monitored, defended, and if necessary blocked. Fire inside a cave also reflected heat off the walls and ceiling in a way that open-air fires could not, making smaller fires more effective for warming a group in cold climates. These advantages explain why cave use was so persistent and widespread.

But every advantage of the cave came paired with a corresponding disadvantage. Caves are fixed in location, and groups relying on seasonal prey migrations or different plant resources at different times of year could not always time their movements to coincide with cave availability. The landscape’s distribution of caves is determined by geology, not by food resource distribution. Caves were also shared with other species, including hyenas, lions, bears, and leopards, which had the same calculation about the advantages of cave shelter.

Archaeological sites routinely show evidence of alternating human and carnivore occupation. The cave environment also had health costs: caves are damp, respiratory conditions thrive in such environments, and parasites accumulate in repeatedly used cave floors. Caves were not where the food was either. A group based in a cave still had to leave every day to forage, hunt, gather water, and collect fuel.

Every day involved a return journey from wherever activities took the group back to the cave, whether or not that was efficient for that day’s foraging pattern. The development of constructed shelter replaced the cave, and this was one of the most consequential technological transitions in the entire prehistory of the species. A group that can build a shelter, even a simple windbreak or crude lean-to of branches and hides, can sleep comfortably in any location its foraging strategy takes it to. The optimal campsite no longer had to be constrained by geological accident.

The oldest confirmed constructed shelters date to approximately 400,000 years ago at Terra Amata in France. More secure evidence comes from Ohalo II in Israel, approximately 23,000 years ago, where remains of six brush huts were found with hearths, stone tools, and plant remains indicating a structured campsite. This was a deliberately planned settlement chosen for its resources on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, not for its geological features. Constructed shelter required both technological capability and organizational complexity.

The mammoth bone dwellings found in Ukraine and Russia, dating to approximately 15,000 years ago, required the organized assembly of hundreds of heavy bones into stable frameworks. These structures were built in the open steppe of Eastern Europe, in an environment with no caves, under genuine cold climate conditions. The people who built them were creating shelter that met their needs, potentially better than caves would have, because locations were chosen for proximity to mammoth hunting grounds. Fire management also played a central role in the transition.

Fire inside a cave is effective but dangerous because the same characteristics that concentrate heat also concentrate smoke. Caves with limited ventilation produced smoke concentrations damaging to respiratory health with sustained exposure. A constructed shelter could be designed with ventilation in mind, while a cave’s ventilation characteristics are fixed by its geology. The social dynamics of growing human groups also favored constructed shelter.

Caves come in fixed shapes and sizes that cannot be expanded. A group that outgrew its cave had to find a larger one, split into smaller groups, or deal with overcrowding. Constructed shelters are scalable, allowing groups to build more shelter, expand existing structures, and add ancillary structures for storage or specialized activities. The development of tailored fitted clothing, documented through bone needles and indirectly through lice genetics placing body lice divergence at approximately 170,000 years ago, changed the human thermal equation.

A person wearing well-fitted layered clothing in a constructed shelter with a managed fire was thermally protected against conditions that would have been dangerous to an insufficiently clothed person in a cave. Prepared bedding materials worked in the same direction, with evidence of layered plant bedding at Sibudu Cave in South Africa dating to 200,000 years ago. Agriculture is often cited as the primary driver of cave abandonment, but this is a significant oversimplification. The shift away from caves was substantially underway long before agriculture.

Hunter-gatherer groups in multiple environments were using constructed shelters as their primary form while remaining fully mobile and dependent on wild food sources. Agriculture changed the scale and permanence of constructed settlement, but it did not initiate it. The earliest confirmed architecture, structures purpose-built for functions beyond weather protection, appears at Göbekli Tepe in southern Turkey approximately 12,000 years ago. The massive stone pillars arranged in circles there were almost certainly not domestic dwellings but represented the application of construction technology to social and ritual purposes.

Caves were not just shelter, however. The cultural use of caves, distinct from their shelter function, tells its own story about why humans remained engaged with them even as the shelter function declined. The cave paintings of Western Europe at Chauvet, Lascaux, Altamira, and Niaux were not made in the parts of caves where people slept. They were made deep in cave systems, far from entrances, in darkness requiring carried light.

The cave as ritual space is a different use from the cave as shelter. Its persistence long after constructed alternatives replaced cave shelter reflects the cave’s specific properties as a ritual environment: absolute darkness, profound silence, and complete separation from the ordinary world. These properties, irrelevant to shelter, are highly relevant to ritual functions and the production of imagery in contexts designed to register significance. This cultural use of caves reached its peak not in the earliest periods of cave use but in the later Paleolithic, between approximately 20,000 and 14,000 years ago, at a time when constructed shelter was well established.

People were going into caves to create culture at exactly the time they were leaving caves as domestic spaces. Researchers have found that the most heavily painted caves also had the most striking acoustic properties, with chambers where sound echoes in unusual ways and where drumming or chanting creates sound environments dramatically different from outdoor acoustics. Whether this reflects deliberate selection of acoustically significant spaces or a general interest in the cave’s capacity for unusual sensory experiences, the correlation is striking. Every other species that uses caves uses them as shelter.

The function is direct and transparent. Humans used caves for shelter, then developed technology that made shelter independent of caves, then continued using caves for purposes that had nothing to do with shelter. They went back into darkness to paint pictures they could not see without light they had to carry, in places where no one might find the paintings for 10,000 years. Ancient humans didn’t abandon caves.

They outgrew their need to live in them while recognizing that caves offered something the constructed home could not provide. A constructed shelter is where you sleep. A cave turned out to be where something else happened entirely.
