A routine archaeological survey in Utah’s Great Salt Lake Desert in 2015 led to a discovery that pushed back the known history of human tobacco use by roughly 9,000 years. Archaeologist Daron Duke spotted a small dark smudge on the open mud flats, which turned out to be the remains of an ancient hearth. Four tiny charred tobacco seeds were found among the debris, radiocarbon dated to approximately 12,300 years ago. The site dates to the end of the Pleistocene, during the final stages of the Ice Age.

At that time, the area was not the dry desert of today but a wetland with marshes and abundant waterfowl. The previous earliest evidence of tobacco use was around 3,000 years ago, based on nicotine residue found in ceramic pipes in Alabama. The Utah discovery replaced that baseline entirely. The hearth also contained more than 2,000 bone fragments, mostly from ducks and other waterfowl, along with stone spear tips, a bone tool, edible plant seeds, and charred willow wood.
Researchers believe the tobacco likely belonged to the species Nicotiana attenuata, a wild desert tobacco still found in the region today. Since the seeds were too small to date directly, radiocarbon testing was performed on three separate samples of burned wood from the same fireplace. Because the plants had been gathered from hillsides at least 13 kilometers away, archaeologists concluded the tobacco was intentionally collected and transported. The most likely method of use, based on practices found in nearby caves, was chewing.
People would twist tobacco leaves and stems into a quid and chew or suck on it, with some seeds landing in the fire. It was not accidental exposure; it was deliberate use of a plant for its effects on the mind, thousands of years before the invention of agriculture. Thousands of years later, tobacco held a profoundly different significance for the Maya of Mesoamerica. For them, tobacco was not recreational but a direct line of communication with the divine.
Mayan priests smoked tobacco in pipes and cigars during religious ceremonies, believing the smoke itself carried prayers upward to the gods. Temple reliefs at the ancient city of Palenque depict priests smoking mid-ritual, described by researchers as documentation rather than decoration. Tobacco smoke was used to purify ceremonial spaces, in divination practices, in healing, and as an offering burned on altars. The Maya believed it could open a boundary between the human world and the spirit world for trained individuals.
Analysis of ancient Maya vessels from Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, conducted by scientists at Washington State University, found chemical traces of two different types of cured tobacco mixed with Mexican marigold. Researchers believe the marigold was added to make the smoke smoother, showing the Maya were blending and flavoring tobacco over a thousand years ago. Archaeological and ethnographic sources also indicate the use of tobacco in enemas during certain ceremonies, a method chosen for maximum absorption speed and intensity. For a culture that believed altered states were the actual mechanism of communication with the divine, faster and stronger effects were not excess but dedication.
Across the rest of the Americas, tobacco was treated with similar reverence. Plains cultures smoked it in sacred pipes, where the rising smoke was seen as a witness to treaties and ceremonies. The Huichol people of present-day Mexico used tobacco smoke as an offering to nature spirits. In the Pacific Northwest, nicotine residue has been extracted from stone pipes at archaeological sites.
Ancestral Puebloans in what is now Arizona chewed wild tobacco between 1,000 and 2,000 years ago. In South America, tobacco was mixed with other plants for psychoactive preparations used by shamans. The Nicotiana genus is native to the Andes and spread northward largely through religious practice and trade networks. In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in the Caribbean.
The Taino people offered gifts to his crew, including dried tobacco leaves. Columbus, uncertain what to do with them, threw the leaves overboard. A month later in Cuba, two crew members, Rodrigo de Jerez and Luis de Torres, watched local people inhaling smoke through a Y-shaped plant stem. One of them, Rodrigo de Jerez, tried it and continued the practice after returning to Spain.
When de Jerez smoked publicly in his hometown of Ayamonte, the Spanish Inquisition arrested him, concluding that only the devil could make a man exhale smoke. He spent several years in prison. By the time he was released, smoking had become fashionable across Spain, making him an early adopter rather than a heretic. The spread of tobacco through Europe was rapid, driven initially by its perceived medicinal value.
Physicians recommended it for headaches, respiratory problems, digestive ailments, and pain. The most influential advocate was Catherine de Medici, the French queen, who used tobacco snuff to treat chronic migraines. Her physician, Jean Nicot, prescribed the treatment. When scientists later isolated tobacco’s primary active compound, they named it nicotine after him.
Within 70 years of Columbus’s landing, tobacco had reached every inhabited continent, including Russia, the Ottoman Empire, Persia, China, Japan, and sub-Saharan Africa. Nicotine’s effect on dopamine in the brain made the plant unusually difficult to stop using once started, a chemistry that facilitated its global spread. Tobacco also became deeply entangled with colonialism. The English colony of Jamestown, founded in 1607, was near collapse until a merchant named John Rolfe planted a hybrid tobacco strain in 1610.
Virginia soon shipped large quantities of tobacco to England, making the colony economically viable. The plantation system that grew around tobacco created enormous demand for labor, which became a major driver of the expansion of the transatlantic slave trade. In the 1880s, the invention of the cigarette machine changed the industry. One machine could produce 200 cigarettes a minute, collapsing prices and making cigarettes widely available.
During World War I and World War II, cigarettes were shipped free to frontline soldiers and included in military rations. Companies framed this as support for the troops, but it also created hundreds of thousands of addicted consumers. By the 1920s, tobacco companies marketed aggressively to women, linking smoking with independence and modernity. Female smoking rates in the United States tripled within 15 years.
Doctors appeared in cigarette advertisements endorsing brands, and people smoked in hospitals, airplanes, restaurants, and schools. At the peak, roughly half of all American adults smoked regularly. Decades of scientific research eventually documented severe health consequences. Tobacco smoke contains thousands of chemical compounds, dozens of which are carcinogenic.
Smoking is linked to lung, throat, mouth, and bladder cancers, heart disease, stroke, and emphysema. Tobacco-related causes kill approximately 8 million people every year worldwide. It is documented that tobacco companies were aware of the serious health risks for decades before disclosing them, worked to suppress and discredit research, and deliberately manipulated nicotine levels to maximize addictive potential. Despite all this, hundreds of millions of people still smoke.
The story returns to those four seeds in the Utah desert. About 12,300 years ago, a person made a deliberate decision to walk to the hills, gather a plant that altered their state of mind, and carry it back to camp. No companies, no advertising, no wars, no health warnings—just a human being reaching for a feeling different from ordinary life. That instinct predates recorded history, but tobacco became the most documented case study of what happens when that ancient drive meets capitalism, colonialism, addiction science, and industrial production.
A practice that began as a sacred walk up a hillside became the leading preventable cause of death on Earth.
